Media Release: Funding positive but falls short of what is really needed

Thursday, 30 October 2025

Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan has welcomed some funding to control weeds and pests in the region but said more needs to be done with many landholders and farmers fighting a losing battle.

Last week the NSW Government announced a further $2.1 million split between 17 new projects across the state.

Two of those projects fall into the Northern Tablelands:

Gwydir State Conservation Area – to reduce the impact of feral pests west of Moree.

Tropical soda apple management in the Armidale Regional Council area.

“Any funding coming into the electorate to tackle these problems is welcome, but it is just a drop in the ocean compared to what is really needed to seriously combat weeds and pests, in particular feral pigs,” Mr Moylan said.

“Farmers urgently need long-term and real support because controlling pests and weeds is both costly and time consuming, leaving many unable to keep up either financially or physically.

“A one-size-fits-all statewide approach simply will not work – we need ongoing local control campaigns to manage these pests effectively and protect both our natural environment and agricultural industries.

“So, while the funding is welcome, the state government needs to make invasive weeds and feral animals a priority before it is too late.”
