Funding win scores new outdoor space at youth centre

Tuesday, 18 November 2025

Many young people have benefitted from the numerous programs on offer at the Inverell Community Youth Centre and they will now have the chance to take them outdoors with Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan announcing funding for a new courtyard area.

A concrete area will be installed thanks to $14,939, secured through the Community Building Partnership program, to provide a space for half court basketball, vegetable gardens and a barbecue area.

Mr Moylan said it is important to for young people to have a positive space as an outlet and the new surface will go a long way to doing that.

“The Inverell Community Youth Centre is a place hundreds of young people from around the region go to access support, mentoring, a warm meal, advocacy, skill development and more,” Mr Moylan said.

“By providing a safe outdoor area, they can engage in physical activity, socialise, learn and have a safe space to hang out.

“With a wide variety of programs for people needing support or assistance in many aspects of life, the new facilities, thanks to the funding from the Community Building Partnership program, will only better the lives of the many people who visit the youth centre.”

Inverell Community Youth Centre coordinator Rhonda Mason said there’s a huge range of services who access the facility and the outdoor area will only bolster their current programs.

“Our centre is now opening three afternoons a week for a drop in youth hub but also hosts many other organisations with their clients through the week,” she said.

“We’ve had this great space fenced off but not able to get a lot of use out of it without the concrete smooth surfaces.

“Plantings and comfortable seating hopefully will be added, and many hours of handball will attract more of our young people to the space.

“Thank you for these funds to complete our back courtyard.

“It takes a village, and funding to help a vulnerable young person find hope, joy and help!”
