Media Release: Relief on the way for roads after flood traffic diversions

Armidale Regional Council and Walcha Council have now been included in NSW Government’s Natural Disaster Declaration after the recent wet weather.

This means these councils can now restore damaged public assets such as roads which have experienced a huge increase in traffic following last week’s floods along the east coast of NSW.

Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan has been in constant contact with Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin, Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison, Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dibb, Armidale Regional Council mayor Sam Coupland and Walcha Council mayor Eric Noakes to address the damage to the region’s roads and come up with a solution for their repairs.

“Roads across the region have seen a huge increase in traffic with the Pacific Highway closed last week due to record-breaking floods,” Mr Moylan said.

“As a result, there has been significant damage to roads and highways across the region and there’s a lot of work that needs to be done to fix them.

“The cost of the damage has met the $240,000 threshold of expenses which wouldn’t normally occur in those LGAs without the event of a natural disaster.

“After numerous discussions with the relevant ministers, those areas have now been included in the NSW Government’s Natural Disaster Declaration which allows the work to be funded by the federal and state governments.

“Credit must go to Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin, Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison, Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dibb, Armidale Regional Council mayor Sam Coupland and Walcha Council mayor Eric Noakes who have all worked together to ensure the best result for the region.

“Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen.

“Now we ask the public to have patience while the clean up and recovery efforts on those damaged roads gets underway.”
