Media Release: The people of regional NSW have spoken

Tuesday, 4 March 2025

Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan has thanked residents of regional NSW for speaking up about an important cause.

A Parliamentary ePetition requesting the NSW Government debate the ongoing crime crisis in regional NSW has hit its target of 20,000 signatures.

This means it now must be scheduled for debate in Parliament.

The ePetition is seeking to:

  • Strengthen bail laws to prevent violent young offenders from re-offending
  • Provide increased resources and support for police officers to effectively apprehend and prosecute offenders; and
  • Review the judicial system to prioritise community safety

“The people of regional NSW have spoken loud and clear; we have had enough of the amount of serious crime in our towns,” Mr Moylan said.

“The fact the ePetition took less than one month to reach its goal proves this is what the people of regional NSW want.

“Change is needed to ensure the courts are compelled to impose tough, effective sentences on those who persistently and repeatedly offend.

“This important issue will now be raised in NSW Parliament and the ball will be in Premier Chris Minns’ court.

“I look forward to seeking the call to speak on this topic in NSW Parliament.

“Congratulations to Phebe Furneaux and the people of regional NSW for standing up to be heard.”
